HIP SURGERY - Results

High Success Rates

Every patient's top concern is whether surgery stands to bring about positive improvements to their lives. I am acutely aware of the scale of the commitment this represents.
Mr Trevor Lawrence

HIGH SUCCESS RATES

The National Joint Registry (NJR) is a medical authority that collects and analyses data on joint replacement surgery in England and Wales. It monitors the performance of each orthopaedic surgeon, as well as the effectiveness of joint replacement implants.

Since 2009 covered by the National Joint Registry, only one per thousand of Mr Lawrence's patients needed repeat surgery due to implant loosening or wear.

The main cause of repeat joint replacement surgery is the loosening of the implants from the bone. Mr Lawrence has dramatically reduced the incidence of implant loosening with his improved surgical techniques.

  • UK average revision (repeat surgery) rate: 1.5 %  over 10 years

  • Mr Lawrence's rate: 0.5 %  over 10 years

Over the last 10 years, no patients of Mr Lawrence's have required revision surgery for loosening or wear of their hip replacements. Also, his data so far shows that his patients' activity and weight do not impact on long-term results following his surgery.

OUTSTANDING RESULTS
The NJR graph below, covering period 1st April 2018 - 31 March 2021, shows Mr Lawrence has performed more than 3 times as many primary hip operations than the UK National Average.

It also shows that Mr Lawrence's hip revision/ repeat surgery rate due to a complication is 1/2 that of the UK National Average.

PATIENT SATISFACTION

Since 1999 Mr Lawrence has carefully monitored the outcomes of his patients. In over 1000 patients assessed in the clinic:

  • 97% say that 'pain relief was good to excellent'.

  • 96% say that 'Satisfaction is good to excellent'.

  • 97% say 'Yes, I would recommend the operation'.

These results confirm a high degree of satisfaction and success following treatment under the care of Mr Lawrence.

RETURN TO FULL PHYSICAL & SPORTING ACTIVITY

Traditionally, patients are told not to undertake impact activities following total hip replacement. Since 1999 when Mr Lawrence first started monitoring the outcome of his patients, he observed that some of his younger patients have returned to jogging 15-20 kilometres or playing tennis and 5 aside football. So far, these activities have not resulted in wear or loosening of the hip replacements and Mr Lawrence now allows his patients to return to virtually all activities following surgery.
